how to develop english vocabulary

In order to develop your English Grammar skills and writing style, it is important for you to have a dictionary, thesaurus, grammar book, spiral notebook, and pens within reach of where you are working. You can develop your vocabulary in different ways: By reading, doing crossword puzzles and other puzzles, and doing vocabulary books.

Reading is one of the best ways to start developing your vocabulary. No matter what type of book you are reading: mysteries, romance, science fiction, fantasies, etc. There are usually words found in the book that you don't know or haven't thought about using before.

While you are reading your favorite book, it is important to have a spiral notebook and pen with you so you can take notes. When you come across any words that you don't know or aren't sure of the meaning, then you can write these words down and look up the word in the dictionary. You can write down the meaning and a synonym and antonym of each word. When you are finished, you can write sentences for each word. By doing this, you will be developing your vocabulary.

Crossword Puzzles and Other Puzzles

Crossword Puzzles are a fun and challenging way to increase your vocabulary. If you aren't sure of a meaning of a word, then you can look it up as your are working on your puzzle. That might help you solve it.

There are also other kinds of puzzles that you can do to increase your vocabulary. Word searches, Word games, Cryptograms, Fill-Ins, Codewords, etc. These kinds of puzzles can be found in a book titled Easy and Fun Variety Puzzles and Games. While you are working on these puzzles, it's important to write down any words that you don't know or find interesting.

Vocabulary Books

There are several vocabulary books available that will help you increase your vocabulary. They give a list of words and worksheets that will help you learn the new words. These can be a valuable resource, too. Just make sure that when you use these books, that you continue until the end of the book. Look at several different books first before you decide which one you might learn from the most. You want one that is going to be interesting and fairly easy to do so you won't be discouraged. If you start out with one that is too difficult to read and understand, you probably won't complete the book. I know from experience. I have purchased vocabulary books in the past and haven't finished them. They seemed too difficult once I started working in them.
